The Software Development Manager (SDM) based in India is a strategic role for our global team, leveraging India’s talent density to scale to meet our customer needs for solutions across multiple technology domains ( Data and AI/ML, Generative AI, Application Modernization and Migration). The SDM will collaborate extensively with field specialists, our flagship customers to uncover solution gaps and customer problems and own developing the technical strategy and implementation to address them. They lead their team in driving engineering excellence, quality and operational focus towards achieving a fast paced results and software delivery. They effectively balance the view of the forest: long term plans, development platform considerations, delivery process and technical strategy with getting in the weeds: being hands on with design, code, implementation details and deployments to model best practices and grow the team’s skills, capabilities and impact.

They will be responsible for hiring, growing and nurturing the best in class software development engineers and program managers, ensuring they meet and raise the Amazon bar for engineering and operational excellence. This role will manage a group of multiple two-pizza engineering teams and develop the group’s charter and tenets.

You would be ideal for this role if you have experience developing people in engineering functions. You delight in career milestones and development of others and take pride in representing your team during excellent delivery as well as through challenging situations. You are passionate about high engineering standards and relentless in pursuing it. You have experience developing and operating software for complex product scenarios. You have familiarity with software development platforms and processes, are at ease building with agility and embracing ambiguity and have helped evolve agile processes for your teams. You have demonstrated experience in interfaces with a broad set of stakeholders, managing communications at multiple levels and are an effective collaborator.

Key job responsibilities
– Build a team that raises the bar on engineering excellence and delivering customer value. This includes growing SDEs, hiring talent and ensuring strong Amazon culture and inclusion.

– Collaborate across business and technical stakeholders including service team leaders to identify and develop the most impact AWS foundational solutions as well as business application accelerators.

– Participate in the global leadership team, and contribute to organizational strategy for innovation, engineering mechanisms and operational rhythm. Re-imagine existing solutions and tools with new technologies specifically generative AI.

– Maintain technical roadmap, business rhythm for the team in India. Develop scaling strategy for building and operating Solutions Infrastructure and AWS Tools.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

– 3+ years of engineering team management experience
– 7+ years of engineering experience
– 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
– Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
– Experience partnering with product or program management teams

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

– Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
– Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
